Character and temperament:

This breed is very intelligent and quick to learn. They require mental stimulation as they can become destructive if they get bored. They make great companions and want to join in all the time. You will need to be an experienced owner to control these dogs and it is always a good idea to get advice from a breeder. Their temperaments vary widely.


Origin:

Groenendael is the area of Belgium that they originated from. Initially they were used for herding livestock.


General description:

Medium sized dog with long, black hair. They may occasionally have white hair on their chest and feet.


Food:

No special requirements. Be careful not to overfeed this breed, they can get obese.


Exercise:

Long daily walks. Belgium Shepherd Dogs need mental stimulation as well as physical.


Grooming:

They have a long straight, heavy outer coat that would require daily brushing and combing, extra care when the dog is shedding.

During the war they were used to search for wounded soldiers.
