Fox Terrier (Smooth Haired)

General Description

Fox Terrier Smooth Coat. A short-backed terrier with a long face, this dog has a short, smooth coat that is predominantly white, with or without tan, black or black and tan markings. He has smooth, elegant lines and appears strong, compact and ready for action!

General Health

Smooth Fox Terriers are generally healthy dogs, and responsible breeders test their stock for health conditions such as patellar luxation and cardiac disease. The teeth should be brushed often, using a toothpaste formulated for dogs.

Hereditary Illnesses

Smooth Fox Terriers can be affected by an inherited condition known as myasthenia gravis. While many breeds of dog can acquire this disease later in life, in the Smooth Fox Terrier it is congenital, which means the dogs are born with it.

Character and Temperament

Fearless, Bold, Keen, Alert, Friendly, Quick

Food

No special requirements

Exercise

Smooth Fox Terriers are active go-getters. A walk around the block is not enough. They need regular opportunities to vent their energy and to use their busy minds to do interesting things.

Grooming

With their short-haired, smooth coats, Smooth Fox Terrier grooming doesn't take much work at all. These dogs' coats don't shed much, and they're in reality too short to mat or tangle, so they'll only need brushing once every week or two. Regular baths aren't necessary--only if your SFT gets especially dirty or stinky. And haircuts aren't required at all.

Origin

The Smooth Fox Terrier's development as a breed is largely undocumented, but the dog has been known as a distinct breed in England since at least the 18th century; the first documented evidence of the Smooth Fox Terrier came in 1790 when a Colonel Thornton painted a portrait of his dog, Pitch.
