Hovawarts

General Description

Physically, Hovawarts are large, heavy-boned dogs that have been bred to be intelligent guardians of livestock and the home. They come in three colours: blonde, black and tan, and black. They are alert, faithful, trustworthy, extremely intelligent, fun-loving, and stubborn.

General Health

Hovawarts are an extremely healthy breed and do not suffer from any hereditary ailments. They can, however, suffer from hip dysplasia occasionally, as is common with large breeds of dogs.

Hereditary Illnesses

The most common disease with a proposed genetic background in Hovawarts is hypothyroidism. The disease is usually caused by lymphocytic thyroiditis, an autoimmune disorder which destroys the thyroid gland.

Character and Temperament

The Hovawart is a medium-temperament working dog with versatile usage and has a very good nose. He is kind, has an even disposition and protective instinct, is self-confident and has the ability to take stress

Food

No special requirements

Exercise

Hovawarts are hardworking dogs and require at least 60 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. When he is not provided with an outlet to release all his excess energy, this dog can become destructive and stubborn. He makes an excellent hiking, running, and jogging partner.

Grooming

Regular brushing untangles the matted hairs on your Dog's coat. And doing this is simple: just brush and comb your Hovawart regularly. If and when you see any mats or tangles, use a detangle solution and a medium-toothed comb. Don't wait until your Hovawart is dirty or matted to introduce him to grooming.

Origin

An old breed from the Harz and Black Forest regions of Germany
