The breed originated in the United States in the late 1700s and early 1800s. They are descendants of Fox Hounds brought over from Scotland and Ireland and bred to have a solid red colour and a natural treeing instinct as a hunter.
As with all breeds, inbreeding is discouraged to avoid that or other health problems.
