American Water Spaniel

General Description

The American Water Spaniel shares some similarities in appearance with the Irish Water Spaniel in coat type and its love of water – making it ideal for going out in boats with the hunters and diving off to retrieve shot birds. It was recognized by the AKC in 1937, and is little seen outside of the USA.

Character and Temperament

Intelligent, energetic, protective, friendly, obedient and trainable

Like any of the spaniel breeds at least one hour a day

Originating in Wisconsin, the American Water Spaniel is the Wisconsin state dog. The breed originated in the areas along the Fox River and its tributary the Wolf River during the early 19th century. Hunters needed a dog that could work on both land and water, a versatile hunter skilled at bringing in a variety of game.
