The American Water Spaniel shares some similarities in appearance with the Irish Water Spaniel in coat type and its love of water – making it ideal for going out in boats with the hunters and diving off to retrieve shot birds. It was recognized by the AKC in 1937, and is little seen outside of the USA.

Originating in Wisconsin, the American Water Spaniel is the Wisconsin state dog. The breed originated in the areas along the Fox River and its tributary the Wolf River during the early 19th century. Hunters needed a dog that could work on both land and water, a versatile hunter skilled at bringing in a variety of game.
