Dachshund (Long Haired)

General Description

Dachshunds are long-backed with short legs, they are a very muscular breed. They are mostly black and tan or red, but there are many colour variations.

General Health

Disc rupture is common among this breed. Stairs should be avoided and they must not be allowed to jump on and off furniture. Dachshunds can also suffer with skin problems.

Character and Temperament

A lively and affectionate breed with curiosity and cleverness to boot. Dachshunds have a very strong hunting instinct. They are intelligent dogs, but they need a firm and consistent hand. Socialising from an early age is important, particularly with cats and children. Dachshunds can be wary of strangers and will generally attach themselves to just one family member. Dachshunds tend to bark a lot, so make good guard dogs from the alerting you point of view.

Food

Dachshunds must not be overfed, this breed can suffer serious health problems if allowed to get obese.

Exercise

A good daily walk is recommended.

Grooming

Dachshunds should be brushed once a week. The excess long hair between their pads needs to be trimmed and their ears should be checked regularly for signs of infection.

Origin

This breed originated in Germany in the 15th century.

Other_info

Dachshunds were brought to England by Prince Albert.

Uterine inertia is common during whelping.
