General Description

Dachshunds are long-backed with short legs, they are a very muscular breed. They are mostly black and tan or red, but there are many colour variations.

General Health

Disc rupture is common among this breed. Stairs should be avoided and they must not be allowed to jump on and off furniture. Dachshunds can also suffer with skin problems. They are susceptible to various illnesses.

False pregnancies and caesareans are common.

Character and Temperament

A lively and affectionate breed with curiosity and cleverness to boot. Dachshunds have a very strong hunting instinct. They are intelligent dogs, but they need a firm and consistent hand. Socialising from an early age is important, particularly with cats and children. Dachshunds can be wary of strangers and will generally attach themselves to just one family member. Dachshunds tend to bark a lot, so make good guard dogs from the alerting you point of view.

Food

Two small meals everyday are recommended for this variety of Dachshund.

Exercise

A good daily walk recommended.

Grooming

Dachshunds should be brushed once a week. The excess long hair between their pads needs to be trimmed and their ears should be checked regularly for signs of infection.

This breed originated in Germany in the 15th century. The miniature Dachshund was used before ferrets to flush out rabbits.

Other_info

Dachshunds were brought to England by Prince Albert.
