Dachshunds are long-backed with short legs, they are a very muscular breed. They are mostly black and tan or red, but there are many colour variations.
Disc rupture is common among this breed. Stairs should be avoided and they must not be allowed to jump on and off furniture. Dachshunds can also suffer with skin problems.

Socialising from an early age is important, particularly with cats and children. Dachshunds can be wary of strangers and will generally attach themselves to just one family member. Dachshunds tend to bark a lot, so make good guard dogs from the alerting you point of view.
Two small meals a day is recommended for this variety of Dachshund. They must not be overfed, this breed can suffer serious health problems if allowed to get obese.
A good daily walk is recommended.
The coat of a wire-haired Dachshund needs to be plucked (not clipped) by a professional groomer, at least twice a year. They need to be brushed and their facial hair cleaned once a week.
This breed originated in Germany in the 15th century.
Dachshunds were brought to England by Prince Albert.
