Estrela Mountain Dog

General Description

Very similar looking to a long-haired German Shepherd Dog. They can be Brindle, Fawn or Grey.

Character and Temperament

The Estrela is a powerful breed and although they will bond well with family members they will be wary of strangers. They are an independent and very intelligent breed, but can be stubborn. They are good with children and other animals and make good guard dogs.

Food

Two good meals a day, slightly more than a German Shepherd Dog.

Exercise

20-40 minutes a day. Limited during the growth period to prevent bone and joint problems.

Grooming

Estrelas do not need an excessive amount of grooming. A good brush once or twice a week is adequate, any less and grooming will become difficult.

Origin

One of the oldest breeds of the Iberian Peninsula, although they didn't arrive in Britain until 1974.

Other_info

The Estrela can still be seen working in Portugal today.
