The OES is a big, agile dog who enjoys exploring and a good romp. Beneath the Old English Sheepdog's profuse double coat is muscular and compact with plenty of bone and a big rump, standing 21 or 22 inches at the shoulder.
Old English Sheepdogs have some health conditions that can be a concern, especially if you aren't cautious about whom you buy from. They include hip and elbow dysplasia, eye diseases, autoimmune hypothyroidism, deafness and heart disease.

The Old English sheepdog is a fairly modern breed that first emerged in England in the 1800s. Farmers used them as “drover dogs,” driving livestock to market as well as pulling carts and wagons. Drover dogs are known for their stamina, steadiness, and courage.
