General Description

The Black Russian Terrier is a robust, large, balanced, agile and powerful dog. He has large bone and well-developed muscles, and great strength and endurance. The Black Russian Terrier must have a stable and reliable temperament, possessing self-assurance and courage.

General Health

The Black Russian Terrier is typically a healthy breed, and a responsible breeder will screen breeding stock for health conditions such as allergies, urinary tract stones, hip and elbow dysplasia, and progressive retinal atrophy, which can cause vision loss and blindness

Hereditary Illnesses

Black Russian Terriers are known to suffer from several health problems common to larger dogs, including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and gastric torsion (bloat), which can be considered non-immunologic heritable disorders of ancestral origin and of complex genetic nature.

Character and Temperament

The Black Russian Terrier is of utmost importance. The Black Russian Terrier is a calm, confident, courageous and self-assured dog, although they can also be stubborn and lazy. He is highly intelligent and adapts well to training.

Exercise

The young Black Russian Terrier needs lots of exercise and may become hyperactive and destructive if it does not have a chance to burn off its energy. Once the dog has reached maturity their energy level decreases dramatically and they are most content laying near their owner.

Grooming

To help the Black Russian look his best, use a slicker brush to brush out the bushy hair around the legs and body, a metal rake to remove tangles from the under coat and a de-shedding comb to remove dead hair.

Origin

The Black Russian Terrier, also known as the Chornyi Terrier is a breed of dog created in USSR in Red Star Kennel during the late 1940s and the early 1950s for use as military/working dogs.
